Ruth Murray (1936–2021), British teacher of the Alexander Technique and Head of Training.
Ruth studied biodynamic farming and was at one time manager of Cranks vegetarian restaurant and health shop in Marshall Street in the London West End. She was an activist for compassion in animal farming. Ruth began lessons with Dilys Carrington in the early 1970s having long suffered from back pain caused by a spondylitic condition of her spine.[1]
Ruth then trained with Walter and Dilys Carrington January 1977 to December 1979. Immediately after graduation she started teaching at the Constructive Teaching Centre (CTC), both privately and at the teachers training course.
She assisted Walter and Dilys Carrington with unswerving loyalty and stability. She was an assistant teacher at CTC, and assisted Walter and Dilys at the annual refresher courses, and at workshops at the international congresses of the Alexander Technique.
Upon Walter Carrington’s death in 2005 she continued CTC as Head of Training until her death (first assisted by John Brown and, after his death in 2008, by Alan Philps). CTC moved from 18, Lansdowne Road, W11, in 2010, and after renting some temporary premises found a new permanent home at Imperial Wharf, a purpose-built centre for the Alexander Technique and the training course, in 2012. [2] (In 2010 CTC became part of the charity The Walter Carrington Educational Trust.)
Ruth continued the tradition of the refresher courses since Walter’s death in 2005 and continued to run workshops at the congresses (Lugano 2008, Lugano 2011, Limerick 2015, Chicago 2018).
